Nothing brightens up a room like fresh flowers—but how do you keep them looking fresh for as long as possible? Here are five easy tips to help your blooms last longer:
-
Trim the stems – Cut about an inch off the bottom of each stem at an angle before placing them in water. This helps the flowers absorb water better.
-
Use clean water – Change the water every 2–3 days and make sure the vase is clean to prevent bacteria buildup.
-
Remove extra leaves – Any leaves that fall below the waterline should be removed to avoid rot and mold.
-
Keep them cool – Flowers don’t like heat! Avoid placing them in direct sunlight, near radiators, or next to fruit (fruit gives off a gas that speeds up wilting).
-
Feed your flowers – If you get a flower food packet, use it! Or make your own with a little sugar, lemon juice, and a drop of bleach.
